WA, MA, & Ku: Defining and Exploring Japanese Religio-aesthetics

Lori Rubeling just returned from a month-long residency in Kyoto and Kurashiki Japan. Her lecture will feature an exploration of Japanese aesthetics. The Japanese Tea Ceremony, Kabuki, Mibu-dera, and Noh performance traditions will be presented to provide a framework for Japanese religio-aesthetic values. She will also present and analyze several examples of Japanese public and private gardens, Buddhist temple complexes, Shinto shrines, and World Heritage sites.

During Professor Rubeling’s Japan residency she was a featured visiting artist and lecturer for Art•SUN’s 25th Anniversary Exhibition at the Kurashiki City Museum. Art•SUN is a women artists collective, comprising over 20 Okayama prefecture artists. Art•SUN’s director, MIYAKE Hiroko explains: “Our mission differs from other art groups, we study what is human.” Lori will also be lecturing on this aspect of her residency next February, 2014, at Stevenson University.
