Architectural Design in 1930’s Tel Aviv and its Intellectual Roots in the Bauhaus
Tel Aviv’s International Style architecture was created with significant contributions by former students of the Bauhaus. Together with modernist designers from related intellectual streams, Bauhaus-trained architects sought to adapt the principles and forms of Neues Bauen (New Building) to the Levantine climate. Jeremy Kargon will give the history of Tel Aviv’s pre-WWII architecture and will address the following questions:
- Who were these Bauhaus-trained architects and why did they come to Tel Aviv? - What were the principles they sought to apply? - What adjustments did they make, and why? - What was the extent of their influence in later years? - What do these buildings look like today?
