Breaking the Words: A Journey of Calligraphy

Calligraphy, the art of writing, has fascinated artists and artisans throughout history and in cultures all over the world focus of Professor Tootoonchi’s sabbatical was researching calligraphy as an art form in di erent languages, with a particular emphasis on Persian writing. Her goal was to reduce the letterform to its essential minimum of point and line with negative and positive values, while at the same time disassociating it from rhetorical usage in daily life, thus giving it an abstract quality. She has been working on two different themes: combining letterforms with natural organic elements and using letterforms as design elements to create non-conformist compositions, both of which she will discuss further in her presentation.
